After our educational system the legal system has the greatest impact on our children.
In spite of this fact unless we ourselves or a love becomes entwined in the criminal justice system we pay it very little attention.
Although our rights as citizens are enumerated in the US Constitution, this becomes meaningless if those sworn to uphold them give merely lip service to those rights. Too often a man or women entering our legal system with good intentions is either corrupted or forced to leave.
As a member of the military you take an oath to defend the Constitution with your life if necessary from all enemies both foreign and domestic. The founding fathers understood the need for such an oath. Notice that the allegiance is not to the government, this is because they fled a corrupt government to establish this nation, they knew that government is a necessary evil and that from time to time it must be refreshed by the people if it is to remain just.
The True Purpose of a Professional License
Most of us believe an attorney is licensed to protect us from poor practitioners, this is not the case. Although it may provide some protection this is only secondary at best. The primary purpose is of a license requirement is to maintain control of the individuals, step out of line no matter how valid, and you put your license at risk. How many would jeopardize their career, home, etc.? Anyone in this position may be inclined to allow your constitutional rights take a backseat to their livelihood.
The Power of discretion
A County Solicitor has the enormous power of discretion in choosing which cases he opts to prosecute and to what extend. Given this enormous power and potential to inflict harm, why do we allow these elected positions to go unchallenged term after term? Most run unopposed for many years.
Freedom is only an illusion without choice.
The State Attorney General Position is an administrative one; the occupant is not required to have a law license. Given the large pool of potential candidates one has to wonder why the only candidates to hold this office have been attorneys.
When an incident occurs involving the legal system that seemingly cannot be suppressed and provokes outrage, we may march and voice our anger publicly only to return to business as usual until the next incident. Many lesser known incidents occur in the mean time, without any real change having taken place. A free people do not beg their master for crumbs, they demand and expect that their constitutionally protected rights will be adhered to. We have the ability to elect an Attorney General that is not a lawyer, who has no ties to the establishment, an Attorney General that could ensure that prosecutors are held accountable and need not fear loss of a law license.
